Newport news: Folk fest pitches pop as main attraction

The Newport Folk Festival has been under new ownership since last year, and this weekend�s pop-heavy lineup (including Brian Wilson, the Black Crowes and Cat Power) points to a radical change in the notable fest�s folk music identity.

The truth is, the festival in Rhode Island has been tip-toeing toward pop for years, and the stream lineup is just a longer stride in that direction.

�It�s simply going more toward the way we�ve already been heading: a contemporary youthfulness event,� said founder George Wein, 82. �But there ar more crush bands and big pop names this year. Getting Jimmy Buffett was a coup.�

Wein sold his Festival Productions to Festival Network in 2007. He remains a chairman.

Wein believes the jazz fest (Aug. 8-10) hasn�t been altered much since reverting to Newport in 1981. But he admits that the kinfolk fest has, gradually, changed enormously.

The new Newport aims to be a musically progressive, popular fest. Instead of the usual deuce or three pop acts of the Apostles to draw the crowds, this class the lineup is chock-full of acts that experience, at best, tangential connections with sept: Phish�s Trey Anastasio, Brandi Carlile, Jim James, and She & Him (M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel) among them.

�Sure, there�s a lot more indie-pop,� said longtime folk fest producer Bob Jones. �Some are fey by folk music traditions, some aren�t. Levon Helm and Steve Earle are identical rootsy. Jimmy Buffett started out as a folkie, and he�s doing a stripped down, non-Parrothead show up. But Brian Wilson? I haven�t figured that one out myself. I infer he has a few folk albums in his house.�

Folk is such an ill-defined musical genre, it is possible to create justifications for most any act�s inclusion at Newport. The Cowboy Junkies started their career with Canadian folk. Stephen and Damian Marley are divine by their dad, Bob, who for certain made the folk music of Jamaica. Jakob Dylan is playing solo, and acoustic.

The bottom line - folk is no thirster popular enough to fill Fort Adams State Park with fans, and so this year Festival Network has interpreted a chance on a very expensive lineup, with pricey tickets to boot. CBSO/Zhang, Symphony Hall, Birmingham

Xian Zhang is one of two Chinese women creating a stir in the conducting world (the other is Zhang Jiemin). Her recent tour of China and Asia with the New York Philharmonic, of which she is associate conductor, was clearly significant in this Olympic year. In this concert with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, she presented an intensely colouristic programme focused on Ravel the master-orchestrator.

Zhang's build is that of a shot-put competitor, while her style is one of maxiumum efficiency and no-nonsense lines. In Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition - not often heard in a first half - her approach was briskly matter-of-fact, using broad brushstrokes rather than more subtle detailing. The muted strings of Il Vecchio Castello had a silken sheen, but Zhang was at her most authoritative when controlling the sweeping power of the full orchestra in the final Great Gate of Kiev.

Ravel's own Daphnis et Chloé, Suite No 2 complemented the Mussorgsky, with Zhang now in more expansive mode and pointing up felicities of scoring. Yet what seemed to be lacking was an insightful shaping of phrases and a more profound sympathy for the harmonic and emotional significance that makes Ravel's soundworld so evocative. Nevertheless, the CBSO responded willingly enough to Zhang's bidding, with the brilliant playing of principal flautist Marie-Christine Zupancic and her section standing out.

These two works framed a performance of Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole in which the violin soloist was the Canadian Karen Gomyo. She succeeded in balancing the flamboyance of the score with its moments of quiet lyricism. Like Zhang, she is certainly an artist to watch.

Royal Hunt began in 1991 when bandleader Andre Anderson, primitively from Moscow, coupled up in Denmark with singer Henrik Brockmann, bassist Steen Mogensen, and drummer Kenneth Olson. With Andre on keyboards and seance musicians playing guitar, Royal Hunt was place to record their first album, Farming of Broken Hearts. This was a basic stone set featuring Andre's classically influenced melodies. For the adjacent record album, Merry andrew in the Mirror, Jacob Kjaer, wHO had played on the first album, joined the band as lede guitar player. Clown in the Mirror is a much more than progressive album and features even more classical-sounding melodies than its forerunner.


A fresh era of Royal Hunt medicine began on the next album, Moving Target, when Brockmann was replaced by American singer D.C. Cooper. Although Anderson continued to indite all the songs, Cooper brought a different, softer sound to the isthmus. Anderson's songwriting also matured, and Moving Target sounded more like an album, as opposed to a collection of songs. Yet some other lineup change hit for the fourth album, Paradox, as drummer Kenneth Olsen was forced to leave the band due to audience problems. Paradox, featuring a sitting drummer, continued along the commission started by Moving Target, if a little softer. Dual Live in Japan followed in 1999.
